Taxon
Description Native Ginger is a perennial evergreen understory shrub native to eastern Australia's rainforests. Native Ginger is in the Zingiberaceae family, but is in the Alpinia genus instead of the Zingiber genus, which contains Ginger and Myoga Ginger. Leaves have red undersides and white flowers develop into dark blue berries. New leaf shoots and berries have a mild ginger flavor and can be eaten fresh or cooked. Seeds are not edible. Frosts will kill the foliage, but plants will regrow from the roots when temperatures rise.
