Description |
Geranium is a genus of flowering annual, biennial, or perennial plants that contains 442 species. The various species grow in temperate regions and in the mountains in the tropics. The flowers of all species have 5 petals with distinctive veins. Flowers can be white, pink, purple, or blue, and all share a particular seed dispersal mechanism that involves a beak-like column that springs open when ripe to propel the seeds away from the flower. Geraniums will grow in any soil that is not waterlogged. They are grown for their ornamental value and also make good companion plants because they repel earworms, cabbageworms, and Japanese beetles. Deadhead spent flowers to prolong blooming.
