Description Cosmos, or Mexican Asters, are medium-sized flowering plants native to Mexico. They are in the Asteraceae family along with daisies. Flowers are pink, purple, or white and have 8 petals. Foliage has fine, threadlike segments and is easily damaged by heavy rainfall. Cosmos are grown as ornamentals throughout temperate regions. They also make good companion plants because they attract pollinators and beneficial insects like ladybugs and wasps. Cosmos can be used as trap crops to attract aphids to the flowers and away from vegetable crops. Deadhead spent flowers to prolong blooming. Cosmos are not drought or cold-tolerant.
