Description |
French Marigold, or Marigold, is a bushy plant that produces yellow, orange, and red pom-pom shaped flowers measuring 5cm in diameter. It is commonly grown as an ornamental. Although it is in the Daisy (Asteraceae) family with Calendula or Pot Marigold, the two plants are in separate genera. French Marigolds are shorter and not as upright as African Marigolds. They are fast-growing and easy to care for. French Marigold attracts beneficial insects like hoverflies and pollinators and repels nematodes. It's strong scent repels greenfly and blackfly and deters the cabbageworm that preys on the Brassica family. Some varieties of French Marigold have edible flowers. The whole plant can be used to make essential oil, and the florets can be used as food coloring or dye.
